Mill Whistle Editor Retires After 30 Years “He’s often the key link in Fieldcrest’s chain of communications.” That’s what Haven Newton, vice president-industrial Relations, says about Otis Marlowe, a man who has become synonymous with The Mill Whistle in the 30 years he has edited the company newspaper without missing a ueadline. William Otis Marlowe retired on April 1, having been associated with Fieldcrest, though not continuously, for 50 years. A native of Eden, he began working at the Draper Sheeting Mill during the summers while a student. He continued working at Draper until his graduation from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1935 with a B. A. degree in journalism. Following graduation, Mr. Marlowe edited a weekly paper in Trenton, North Carolina for two and one-half years. He returned to Eden in 1945, coming to work for Fieldcrest as an industrial engineer. He was a member of the committee which helped establish The Mill Whistle and was named editor on November 1,1946. Mr. Marlowe and his wife, Anne, have three daughters, one son, and six grandchildren. Two daughters live in Eden, Mrs. Pam Dove and Mrs. Jean Hand. The other daughter, Mrs. Carol Gwynn, lives in Downer’s Grove, Illinois. Their son. Bill, lives in New York City. The Marlowes plan a number of trips following his retirement. Mr. Marlowe also plans to continue his writing, perhaps concentrating on historical features.
